Class of 2010

Julie Higbee accepted a reference and instruction position at North Georgia College and State University, where her title will be Assistant Professor of Library Science.

Marty Branch is now the Director of the Mitchell School of Business library at the University of South Alabama in Mobile - "just perfect for me," she writes, "when coupled with my MBA/MLIS and IBM background."

Amber K. Cheung was hired by the Auburn Public Library system as a Reference Librarian. Well done, Amber!

Josh Sahib has been hired at The University of Alabama's Gorgas Library as Research & Instructional Services Librarian.  Josh brings a strong background in technology to the position.  He worked as an eLearning Management Specialist at the FRC while he was a graduate student.  Josh also has strong ties to the UA campus.  He received his B.S. from C&BA in Management Information Systems, an M.A. in American Studies and an MLIS from SLIS. 

Class of 2009

Jackie Brodsky presented a poster entitled Project FIT 4 Retirement:  Deconstructing Walls Between Library Students and the Community through Information Technology Instruction for Senior Citizens” at the New England Library Association annual conference in Boxborough, Massaachusetts, on October 19, 2010.

Melissa Fortson accepted a Research & Instructional Services position at University of Alabama's Gorgas Library.   Melissa received her MLIS from the University of Alabama and a BA in English from Sewannee: The University of the South.  She has been working as the Academic Coordinator for Virginia College since January.  She also has experience working with disabled populations in a variety of settings. 

Michael Gur is happily ensconced as the Reference Supervisor at Handley Regional Library in Winchester, Virginia.

Amy Hardin has had an article entiled "Essential oils and antioxidants derived from citrus by-products in food protection and medicine: An introduction and review of recent literature," published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Information, vol. 11, no. 2, 20, p. 9-122.

John McConnell has accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Library Science at North Georgia College and State University.

Lauren Mabry writes: "I am a middle school librarian and loving it!!"

Cindy Markushewski has joined the National Children’s Advocacy Center as a research librarian. Cindy’s expertise in “all things medical” will be a tremendous asset to the 900 children’s advocacy centers served by this library.  

Class of 2007

Libraries and the Cultural Record [Exploring the History of Collections of Recorded Knowledge] reviews my latest book in its Volume 45, Number 3, 2010 issue.  James V. Carmichael, Jr., writes, “For at least thirty-five years…library historians have been exhorted to broaden their narrative appeal to a wider range of publishers, to the public, and most of all to other historians….That library ignominy, and thus library history obscurity, is a situation that bears immediate correction is clear to David M. Battles, the author of The History of Public Library Access for African Americans in the South. Congratulations, David, on this publication.

Todd Wallwork accepted a position as the Digital Materials Librarian at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in downtown Nashville.

Jason Phillips accepted a position at Georgetown University Library to be their new Government Information Reference Librarian & Bibliographer.

Birmingham Magazine reported on October 5th that Maya Jones received an award for outstanding work at the Birmingham Urban League Young Professionals’ inaugural Awards Gala in August. Well done, Maya!

Class of 1994

Jennifer Keach, SLIS faculty scholar in 1994, has co-authored Web Project Management for Academic Libraries, a Chandos Publishing/Neal-Schuman imprint.  Jennifer is Director of Digital Services at James Madison University in Harrisonburg VA.

Louie Mays stopped in the SLIS office on October 1st to take a look around.  He and his brother Tom are here from Ohio for the game; he says he has not been back for a game since 1979!
