How to Negotiate an Offer
- Find a quiet place where you can think and discuss the terms of an offer without interruptions or distractions
- Write down the terms offered before responding. If you need additional time to think about the offer, ask for it. Even if you think you cannot accept the offer for some reason, take some time to explore options
- Negotiate in good faith: do not delay the process unnecessarily, but take the time you need to discuss all aspects of the offer thoroughly and to your satisfaction
- Try to negotiate the highest beginning salary possible because your future raises will be based on that figure. If your desired salary cannot be achieved, other one-time funding options may be available such as travel to seek accommodation, professional travel or continuing education funding, moving expenses, etc. Remember to consider the benefits offered as well as the salary when deciding on an offer
- Discuss any other terms of the agreement. When deciding on a start date, leave yourself enough time to make the change to a full-time professional position
- Find out when your appointment will be announcement at your future place of work. Time your own announcement accordingly, and do not announce your success until you have the agreement signed and in hand
- If an agreement is not possible, withdraw with grace and poise, and move on
- If you accept the position, thank those who served as references, and notify SLIS, your colleagues and others. Withdraw any pending applications.
