How to Prepare for an Interview

  • Find out as much about the interview schedule as possible. Research the hiring organization and prepare questions
  • Make any travel arrangements that will not be covered by your host. If traveling by air, pack your clothes in your carryon luggage
  • If you need to purchase or borrow suitable clothes, do so as soon as possible and practice wearing them, especially shoes
  • Choose professional attire – if in doubt, dress up
  • Choose clothes that are comfortable and attractive on you
  • Minimize jewelry, especially noisy bangles, earrings, etc.
  • Depending on the situation, you may want to cover tattoos and remove piercing jewelry
  • Look at yourself in the mirror, back and front; practice standing up straight, shaking hands, and sitting comfortably
  • Take only the accessories you will need (purse, umbrella, briefcase, tote bag, coat, etc.)
  • Practice answering questions with a friend who will give you honest feedback. If you have access to practice interview sessions, take advantage of them
  • If you are asked to make a presentation, practice, practice, practice. Speak slowly and clearly and face your audience. Make eye contact. Use technology with care and have a plan B ready. Ask for time to set up your presentation at the host organization
  • Smile and try not to show fatigue.  Remember that you are “on” for the entire length of your visit, including social events
