How to Prepare an Application

Read the position announcement carefully and list the items that are required for the application. Note the application deadline and begin the process early.

Components of an application may include any or all of the following:

  • Cover letter
  • CV or resume
  • List of references
  • Transcript
  • Examples of work, e-portfolio, or similar

Supply exactly what is requested if you want your application to be considered. If you cannot, indicate the reason so that the hiring body knows that you are not ignoring the requirement.

List of References

Think carefully before deciding who to list as a reference in support of your application. Talk to each person in advance and, if they are willing, find out how they wish to be listed; i.e. title, form of name, contact information, etc. Find out if they wish to be notified each time you apply for a position. Make their lives as easy as possible; writing letters of reference is a considerable undertaking.

List your references in priority order. List only the number of references requested, and indicate briefly their relationship to you if it is not immediately apparent.  Unless it is common practice for specific positions, do not use personal friends, relatives, pastors, or “character” references. List your professors when applying for your first professional positions only, unless you have continued working with them after graduating.

Transcripts

If you are asked for a transcript—supply one.  It may cost you a little money, but it will insure that your application will be considered.

Examples of work, e-portfolios

If you are asked to submit examples of your work, choose items and formats most likely to show your skills in a very positive light.
