Career Pages

Welcome to the UA SLIS Career pages. We hope that you will find this information useful as you pursue your career goal. LIS students find positions in many different environments; this information is general and intended for all graduates. Information specific to particular types of positions is readily available in the professional literature and online.

Each page is both an integral part of the career pages and a self-contained page; therefore you may choose to read the pages in the order below or open them in any order as needed.

Simple Suggestions for Success in your Search:

  • Start early and set aside time to prepare.
  • Talk with your advisor.
  • Think outside the box.
  • Spend time on the process; it will pay off.
  • Ask for help.
  • Have patience.
  • If you are not chosen for a position, pick yourself up and continue your search without dwelling on the negative.

PLEASE NOTE

Students should prepare for professional positions from the start of their LIS programs. Taking advantage of opportunities such as internships, volunteering, contributing time and expertise to School activities, joining student and other organizations, preparing posters for conferences, and so on, will help immensely in preparing an application and starting in a new position.

A professional digital presence is extremely important in one’s career. Make sure that yours is squeaky clean. Employers use social networking and other applications to find out about applicants, so check frequently and act accordingly.
